Kim Eberhart is another one of Stepford’s long-time residents, having moved there with her family from Manhattan’s Upper West Side in 1975. Her mother, Joanna, was an aspiring photographer, while her father Walter worked as a lawyer. Unnerved by the unusually submissive and dutiful housewives residing in the town, Joanna quickly befriended Bobbie Markowe, working closely with her to uncover the cause behind the odd behaviour of the other women. Walter, meanwhile, joined the Men’s Association, becoming fully immersed in their inner circle.
Upon her parents’ return from a romantic weekend away, Kim quickly realised that her mother had completely changed; she was no longer interested in photography, and now preferred to spend her time cooking, cleaning and shopping. Kim was increasingly disturbed by this development, and came to the conclusion that her mother was long gone. She made several plans to flee Stepford when she was in her teens, but was unable to for many years due to her father’s role in the Men’s Association, and had completely forgotten about said plans by the time of his death. Her younger sister Amy ran away back to New York at the age of 15, some time after coming out as a trans woman and consequently fearing for her own safety, and has since followed in her mother’s footsteps, working full-time as a photographer, specialising in photojournalism and portrait photography.
Kim runs a B&B not far from the centre of Stepford, where Zach Taylor checks in upon arriving in the town. At first she maintains a professional distance from him, not wanting to get involved any further with the conspiracy at the centre of her hometown, but when she finds him visibly disturbed after an interview with Rosie Everett, she eventually confides in him about losing her mother. She later assists Zach with looking up a name that is given to him – Ellie D’Amico – and immediately discovers a huge database of missing women within the East Coast who match the descriptions of several of the wives in Stepford.
On the surface, Kim appears jaded and closed-off, but in reality she’s incredibly resourceful and caring in her own way. Her tough exterior is a defence mechanism after having witnessed several women become subservient housewives almost overnight after moving to Stepford, and as a result she has sworn off men and relationships in an effort to avoid meeting the same fate.
